Grand Prior


Cardinal Martino 2His Eminence Renato Raffaele, Cardinal Martino, is the Grand Prior and Spiritual Head of the Sacred Military Constantinian Order of St George. He was appointed Grand Prior in 2010 and has been decorated by many countries across the world in recognition of his pastoral and diplomatic work. His Eminence holds the rank of Knight of the Illustrious Royal Order of Saint Januarius and Bailiff Grand Cross of Justice for Cardinals of the Constantinian Order.

HH Pope Francis appointed His Eminence as Cardinal Protodeacon of the Holy Roman Church in June 2014. Cardinal Martino has also served as President for the Pontifical Council of Justice and Peace (2002 – 2009) and for the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerants (2006 – 2009) of the Vatican City State.

His Eminence is one of the most travelled members of the Sacred College of Cardinals and served as Apostolic Nuncio throughout Asia and for sixteen years as the Holy See’s Permanent Observer at the United Nations in New York. In 1980, Martino was named Apostolic Pro-Nuncio to Thailand and Singapore and Apostolic Delegate to Laos and Malaysia and was named Archbishop of the Titular See of Segerme. In 1983, he was named Apostolic Delegate to Brunei Darussalam, while retaining his other posts.

On 8 October 2011, Pope Benedict XVI named Cardinal Martino as the Special Papal Envoy to Burma were His Eminence met with Nobel peace laureate Suu Kyi.
